Looks are everything in the world we live in. We're bombarded with images of "perfect" bodies all the time, especially on social media. This is what we’re supposed to look like – this is the body we need for a good life, right? We don’t think so! Our mission at Unicity is to Make Life Better by helping you take back control over your health, your life and your body. And one important step of this journey just might be accepting your body the way it is.
Body acceptance is a liberating concept because it can help you learn to truly appreciate what an extraordinary gift your body is. Learn to treasure your body and you will want to take care of it – not to look great, but to truly feel great.
Take these steps towards a happy and healthy relationship with your body:
Be kind to yourself. Learn to talk to yourself compassionately instead of beating yourself up for not looking a certain way. Don’t berate yourself for slipping up on your diet. Try to find clothing that makes you feel comfortable and confident, instead of trying to squeeze into something that doesn't fit right. Most importantly, cut yourself some slack: We are often the most brutal judges when it comes to our appearance.
Let go of comparisons. It's easy to look at someone else's body and feel like yours doesn't measure up. But here's the thing: comparing yourself to others is a losing game. There will always be someone who you think looks better than you, and it will always make you feel bad. So why not focus on your own strengths and abilities, instead of trying to measure up to someone else's standards?
Appreciate your body for what it is. Your body does all sorts of amazing things for you, every day. It keeps you alive and healthy. It lets you walk, run, dance, and do all sorts of other physical activities. A healthy body is all you need for a beautiful life!
Give yourself time. Body acceptance is easier said than done. We live in a culture that's obsessed with appearance, and it can be hard to tune out all the noise. But with practice, you can learn to cultivate a more positive relationship with your body. You can learn to appreciate it for what it is, instead of trying to change it into something it's not. Never forget, life is about living, not being looked at!
“At Unicity, our fundamental believe is that the human body, regardless of size, shape or ability, is a precious gift. Our bodies enable us to enjoy this world. They help us grow and gain knowledge and understanding, which enrich our individual lives and our communities. Learning to discipline and care for our bodies is also a gift. A gift that results not only in better health, but also instills greater confidence in all aspects of our lives … the authentic confidence that comes from knowing that you are in control of yourself, and from living with a sense of awareness and gratitude for the gifts that you’ve been given.”
